Starting college is difficult. Trust me, I’ve been there. College is a lot of fun, but there’s also a lot of hard work that goes into it. One of the most difficult things for people just starting college is moving out of their parent’s house and into their college dorm room. This is a very exciting time, but it’s not uncommon for new college students to feel homesick. Being in a new place with new people can make anyone miss home, so why not make your dorm room feel like home? I’m a college junior, and I lived in a dorm for two years. Trust me, I really appreciated making my dorm room feel home-y! It is a home away from home, after all! In this article, I will be discussing how you can make your college dorm room feel comfy and cozy so that it feels like home, and things that you can buy to make your dorm room suit your style!
If you really want your college dorm room to feel like your second home, you have to make sure that it reflects you as a person. Think about how you would decorate and set up your bedroom at your parents house. Think about the activities that you’re involved in, whether it be choir, band, sports, student government, etc. Incorporate that into your room! What are some things that you’re interested in? Who are your favorite celebrities? What are your favorite movies and albums? Incorporate that into your room! For example, if you play basketball, why not adorn your desk with some trophies and awards that you’ve received over the years, or how about your favorite basketball that you’ve had since you were ten years old? If you love to sing, why not put up some posters of your musical inspirations, and maybe some pictures of you singing at different events? Find items from your past that represent who you are, and every time you look at these items you’ll think of home and all of the memories you created before you started the wonderful, crazy journey that is the college experience. One thing that you can add to your room that I really recommend, regardless if you’re a girl or a guy, is a cork board that you can fill with pictures and little mementos from your past. You can find cork boards in a variety of sizes at fairly inexpensive prices. Target is a great place to find cork boards, as is Amazon.com. Here’s a link to a cork board similar to the one that I bought myself for my dorm room a couple of years ago: Click here to Purchase Quartet Cork Bulletin Board!.
Before I left for school, I printed out a bunch of pictures from my computer. This included pictures of me from elementary school, my pets, family vacations, high school dances, etc. I chose my favorites and stuck as many as I could on my cork board! Another cool thing that I’ve seen people do is stick ribbons, certificates, etc. to their cork boards for even more nostalgia. The possibilities are endless! If you want to make your dorm room feel like home, then you have to pick out a super cool bedspread! PotteryBarn Teen usually has some pretty cool bedspreads, although they tend to be a little pricey. If you (or your parents) are trying to stick to a budget, then I recommend Target. They always have really nice bedspreads in a variety of colors and patterns, for both girls and guys. I’ve even seen bed-sets that come with a comforter, sheets, pillow cases, etc. Wherever you shop, though, make you sure you check to see if your college’s beds are “twin XL” (my college’s are, and I know several other schools’ are as well). If you buy a twin-sized comforter for a twin XL bed, it’s not going to fit properly. If I’m not mistaken, Target sells twin XL sizes, as do a lot of other retailers. You know what really makes a college dorm room feel home-y? A seating area! Now, most college students don’t have the luxury of having a ton of space in their room, but there are certainly ways that you can create a little seating area in your room. I strongly recommend getting a futon of some sort. Not only does this function as a couch for you to sit on to watch TV and do homework, but it also folds out into a bed, so you can have a friend spend the night! Futons can be a little expensive, but I actually found one at Walmart a little over a year ago that only cost me about $100. It’s super comfortable too! Here’s a link to a similar one: Click here to purchase DHP Emily Convertible Linen Futon, Gray!. I would also check out places like PB Teen, Target, and Amazon for futons (again though, PotteryBarn Teen will be a little more on the expensive side).
Having a little friend in your dorm room would make it feel more like home, wouldn’t it? And no, I’m not talking about taking your parent’s dog with you to college (I’m pretty sure most colleges and universities wouldn’t allow that, anyway…). I’m talking about a little fishy friend! Fish are inexpensive and super easy to take care of, and most colleges (at least the colleges that I know of) allow students to have a small fish tank in their dorm room. I would recommend getting a single betta fish. I got a betta fish for myself my sophomore year of college, and I probably paid around $40 for everything (this included the tank, rocks, food, tank ornaments, water purifier, and the fish itself). Plus, betta fish are pretty, they make a great addition to your desk!
It’s super easy to make your dorm room feel like home, as long as you know where to start! Decorate your room with pictures and items from your past, find a super cool bedspread, buy a futon of some sort, and (maybe) buy yourself a betta fish! I hope that this article was helpful in figuring out what to do with your college dorm room. Happy decorating, and enjoy your new home away from home!
